Abstract

The Japan Diabetes Society (JDS) Committee on Standardization of Laboratory Testing Related to Diabetes Mellitus has taken over the activity of the JDS Glycohemoglobin Standardization Committee led by Dr. K. Shima. On March 31, 2001, our committee ended the distribution of the primary calibrator for standardization of HbAic measurement (lyophylised material, 2 levels, JDS Lot 1). This material was mannufactured and distributed by the Shima committee, and achieved standardization throughout Japan. The new committee qualified the primary standard material (deeply frozen material, 5 levels, JDS Lot 2) distributed by HECTEF. Our committee hopes that the standardization of HbAic measurement will be achieved using Lot 2 within 5 to 10 years. The committee sent JDS Lot 2 to the anchor laboratory of the National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program (NGSP) in the United States, where its HbAic levels were determined. Results showed that the relationship between JDS and NGSP is as follows:
JDS (%) =NGSP (%)-0.3%.
In conclusion, we recommend that simple subtraction of 0.3% from NGSP will produce JDS.
