Abstract
The Drug Evaluation Committee of the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA) has been continuously working on the implementation and promotion of appropriate animal testing. In recent years, as interest in animal welfare and protection has been increasing, we has been working to promote appropriate animal testing, with one of the most important themes being to gain public understanding of the proper animal testing that is required.
As one of these activities, we conduct a biennial survey on the status of responses by member companies of JPMA to the items specified in the “Fundamental Guidelines for Proper Conduct of Animal Experiment and Related Activities at Institutions under the Jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare” and other guidelines. And, we are aiming to achieve 100% implementation by member companies.
The most recent survey was conducted in 2021. In addition to the survey on the status of compliance, the current state of awareness on the disclosure of animal study information was conducted under the main theme of gaining public understanding. Furthermore, a meeting was held to exchange opinions within the association to share issues regarding the status and awareness survey, and to discuss future improvements and solutions, especially efforts toward outreach to society.
Looking back at the results of recent years, the current status of animal testing and the current state of awareness of animal testing in pharmaceutical companies will be discussed.
