In addition to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, the concept of primordial prevention has been recently proposed. Primordial prevention aims to avoid the emergence and establishment of the social, economic, and cultural patterns of living that are known to contribute to an increased risk of disease according to WHO. We have studied the effects of environmental chemicals on human health, especially that of a fetus. In umbilical cords, which are fetal tissues, many types of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were detected, indicating that humans are exposed to such pollutants even during the fetal period. Fetuses are vulnerable to environmental factors including environmental chemicals. We are conducting two birth cohorts, Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS) and Chiba Study of Mother and Child Health (C-MACH) by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, to investigate the effects of exposure to environmental factors during the fetal period on human health in later life. Additionally, we explored methods to reduce the exposure to indoor air chemicals in Chemiless Town Project, or reduce the exposure to POPs from the body. We are conducting the WACo (Well Active Community) project as JST-OPERA under our concept “Community in which people get healthy by simply living there”. In this symposium, we will introduce our studies to date, including the WACo project.
