Abstract

In Japan, Sasa senanensis has been traditionally used as folk medicine when people had hematemesis, halitosis, and so on. Since halitosis and oral diseases are also serious problems in veterinary medicine, in this study, we examined whether the long-term administration of traditional Chinese medical supplement Sou-ga, whose main component is S. senanensis, to dogs is safe and affects dog halitosis and oral disease. First, we administered normal-dose (4 tablets/head) or high-dose (20 tablets/head) Sou-ga to beagle dogs for 56 days and observed their general status (vigorousness, appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and body weight), as well as changes in blood parameters. Next, we administered normal-dose Sou-ga and conducted visual evaluation (plaque, tartar and gingivitis score), halitosis test (Orastrip test and Sensory test) and NGS analysis for microbial change in oral environment. After normal-dose or high-dose Sou-ga administration, there were no clinically important changes in general status and blood parameters. Although no notable changes were observed in the plaque and tartar score after normal-dose Sou-ga administration, there were decreasing trend or significant decrease in some of target teeth in gingivitis score. Decreasing trend was reported in Orastrip test which could detect oral volatile sulfur compounds. Significant decrease was observed in Sensory test. In NGS analysis, bacteria associated with halitosis found decreased. In conclusion, Sou-ga may become a safe and effective traditional Chinese medical supplement which improve dog halitosis and oral environment.
