Abstract
The determination of fabric length required for pattern layout is very important in apparel manufacturing. Usually this work is made by operator's intuition and skill or past experiences of cutting or layout procedures. The difficulty of pattern layout exists in complexity of pattern shape, different combinations of garment sizes, various lot size of each garment, fabric colors, fabric width and pitch of desigh pattern on fabrics. Consequentry, threr were few papers dealing with theoretical fabric length required for pattern layout.
In this paper, the required fabric length of men's shirt and women's dresses was first investigated by the technique of miniature patterns which were transfered from original patterns, and the general rules in pattern layout was found out. Second, following items were discussed ; (1) the relationships between the required fabric length of each garment and the factors affecting on pattern layout, i. e., complexity of pattern shape, garment size, fabric width, direction of grain and various combinations of sizes, (2) theoretical rule in relations between the required fabric length of each garment and the factors affecting on it, and (3) the establishment of simulated model for calculating the required fabric length of a garment.
