Abstract

The present study describes an applicability of bell-mouth geometry to improve tribological properties of journal bearings of reciprocating compressors used for household and commercial refrigerators. The bell-mouth geometry at the both edge surfaces of the bearing refers to a micrometer order gradient. The tribological properties were evaluated using a specially-developed testing apparatus at a constant sliding speed under lubricated condition. The anti-seizure resistance was considerably improved by the application of bell-mouth geometry at the edge of a bearing. It was examined the mechanism of improving seizure properties with a focus on the “frictional heat” generated during sliding contact. It was found that an appropriate bell-mouth geometry avoided an increase in the frictional heat between the journal bearing. As results, anti-seizure properties were remarkably improved. Consequently, it was concluded that the application of bell-mouth geometry was effective means to improve the friction properties including seizure of the journal bearings for the reciprocating compressor. It was also applicable to rotary compressors used in air conditioners.
