Abstract
Fundamental experiment on surface vortex preventing ring together with vertical pipes and double suction bell has
been conducted and reported in this paper. At the same time, vortex cores have been abstracted based on the numerical
simulation results, and judgment criteria of surface vortex occurrence have been established based on both numerical and
experimental data. The vorticity magnitude of surface vortex occurrence has been obtained based on simulation results.
Moreover, the effect of vortex preventing ring pipe and double suction bell to pump performance has been also investigated in this paper. The installation of vortex preventing ring together with vertical pipes can prevent the surface vortex
occurrence effectively. When water level becomes lower and flow rate increases, surface vortex will occur accompanying submerged vortex. The installation of double suction bell or surface vortex preventing ring pipe can stop the occurrence of submerged vortex or air-entrained vortex separately.
