Abstract

This study is a trial of developing a teaching example of integrated learning which incorporates art and handicraft with foreign language activities, making use of the characteristics of art and handicraft. We applied a language approach in CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and Multimodality theory for the teaching. We developed an activity of drawing where the theme is My Best Memory with reference to 2 textbooks which are adopted in present school education. “Scissors and papers’ harmony” “Spreading your dream art and handicraft 5-6 grades, No.2”, Kairyudo publishing company and a teaching unit in Foreign language activities “My Best Memory” “We can! 2”, MEXT and put it into practice to the sixth grade students. According to the results of analysis about quality and effectiveness of the student’s learning through art works, reflection sheets and learning process, we have found that the pupils’ proactive and interactive attitude was witnessed and their deep learning was realized by the CLIL approach. Communication with making full use of multiple modes such as colors, forms, depth, composition and languages helped to produce their own meaning and value from multiple perspectives.
