Abstract
The English idiom take place is one of the most basic idiomatic expressions. This paper presents the semantic nature of take place by comparing it with ergative and activo-passive verbs. I will argue that take place is not classified into ergative or activo-passive verbs, which results from the semantic nature of take which has less agentic feature than other transitive verbs such as make.
