Abstract
This research is exploring the challenges faced by German urban renaissance schemes incorporating joint building ventures (Baugemeinschaften). It is based on literature research and interviews held in Germany. As a result we found that 1) joint building ventures are an important feature of modern town redevelopment schemes organized by the public sector, but at least in Hamburg it is difficult to find a balance between social and project needs as far as private premises are concerned. Furthermore, 2) not only public support but also further cooperation with the private sector is needed in order to establish joint building ventures as a new means of urban redevelopment.
