Abstract
In Seoul City of Korea, the New Town Project has been established to renewal of built-up areas. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the problems of urban renewal within the new town project areas of Seoul Metropolitan City. As the case study areas, three areas are chosen out of the 26 new town project areas. The main findings are as follows: 1) the renewal project has caused problems with effective city space and land use system because it focuses on private housing development. 2) As for the New Town Project, the duties of the public sector were increased in the renewal of built-up areas, although such duties were not clearly defined. In conclusion, we suggest a clear rule on the functions between the public and private sectors.
