Abstract
Karyotypes in eight species of the Mytilidae have been studied. In the subfamily Mytilinae, Mytilus coruscus and Crenomytilus grayanus have the same chromosome number n=14, and their karyotypes resemble each other. Six species of the subfamilies, Modiolinae, Musculinae, and Lithophaginae, have the chromosome numbers ranging from n=14 to n=16. The karyotypes of these species are clearly different in the same genus or the same subfamily.
