Abstract
To be specialists with publicly recognized qualifications, veterinary nurses need to have a strong consciousness of their role. In this study active veterinary nurses were asked fifty-six (56) questions focused on their daily work activities. For each of the items five ( 5 ) levels of questions were asked regarding the consideration level, operational level and self-evaluation. The results were converted into scores and the mean values were determined. They were transposed onto a chart with the operational level on the vertical axis and the consideration level on the horizontal axis. Three ( 3 ) groups, high, middle and low were identified on the chart. Results of the study showed that: most of the nurse roles were in either the middle or low group; veterinary nurses need an improved education program based on their range of work activities so they can work with confidence; and it is necessary for veterinarians to have a greater collegiate understanding of the role of the veterinary nurse.
