Abstract
With the aim of compiling a large-scale veterinary nursing corpus for English education of students in animal health technology, the present study focused on literature pertaining to feline welfare, disease, and health care as a first step. This resulted in compilation of a‘Feline Veterinary Nursing Corpus’ from the documents that were collected. The total volume of the corpus was 233106 words (73910 words for Disease; 110701 words for Welfare; and 48495 words for Health care). Compiling a corpus contributes to English education, enabling teachers to extract the words to be taught to those learning veterinary nursing. On the basis of this corpus, the author extracted frequently-used words using WordSmith ver. 6 and translated them into Japanese. Keywords with Keyness G 2 from each category (Disease, Welfare, and Health care), representing specific words in the feline-related literature, were also introduced. The results of this study revealed specific words or phrases that students hoping to procure new information on feline veterinary nursing need to memorize, and suggest how a feline corpus, introduced as a first step for compiling a large-scale English Veterinary Nursing Corpus, could be utilized for English education of veterinary nursing students.
