Abstract
A detailed explanation for proper techniques regarding manual restraining of animals is expected by veterinary nurses because they are often injured by animals during their restraining in daily work at veterinary hospitals. However, as the instructions for techniques vary widely depending on textbooks and reference books for veterinary nursing, there is a possibility that the choice of techniques used in daily veterinary practice is left to an individual nurse. We conducted the questionnaire surveys on restraint of animals toward 112 nurses to develop the safety measures of veterinary nurses during medical treatment of animals. We found that 79.8% of respondents needed to restrain animals manually > 10 times a day. The choice of the techniques depended on veterinary hospital and veterinary nurse. In addition, 94.0% of the nurses were injured by animals during manual restraining in the year before the questionnaire survey. Therefore, communicating proper restraining techniques for nurse safety through veterinary nursing education is urgent.
