Abstract
This study investigated the awareness of geriatric cognitive dysfunction in dogs among dog owners and the signs of cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) in geriatric dog owners. Seventy-nine percent of dog owners said they were "interested" or "very interested" in CDS, compared to 92% of geriatric dog owners. Besides, 85% of the geriatric dog owners knew the symptoms of CDS. In geriatric dogs, the incidence of housesoiling was the highest at 50%, and the onset was the earliest compared to other signs, at an average age of 14 years. Walking time was also found to play a role in the occurrence of housesoiling. Although knowledge of CDS was widespread among geriatric dog owners, it will be essential to provide appropriate information on dealing with CDS in the future.
