Abstract
The Veterinary Medical Assistance Team (VMAT) plays a crucial role in providing animal healthcare during disasters, but there are variations in its organization and functions across different regions. We conducted an assessment of the following two items, to clarify the role of veterinary nurses for companion animals (VNCA) in disaster veterinary assistance; 1) the actual state and expected roles of certified veterinary nurses (CVNs) and groomers belonging to VMAT and 2) the services provided by VMAT in each regional veterinary association. A survey was conducted targeting 21 regional veterinary associations, with 17 providing responses. The survey was conducted from January to April 2023. The study found discrepancies in the number of CVNs and groomers affiliated with VMAT. CVNs were primarily expected to help veterinarians in medical treatment during both ordinary times and disasters. VMAT activities primarily focused on disaster response, with the most common activity being the medical treatment of animals. There were variations in disaster support facilities and the number of veterinarians capable of being VMAT members among regional associations. It has been considered crucial that, in addition to the duties of VNCAs based on the Veterinary Nurses for Companion Animals Act, the examination of the types of animals covered by their duties and collaboration with local veterinary associations and government agencies are important to respond effectively in disaster veterinary assistance situations.
