The purpose of this paper is to clarify the substantial contrast between Hoiku (Early Childhood Care) and Kyouiku (Education) in textbooks, based on a text-analysis of “An Introduction to ECEC (Early Childhood Education and Care)” using KH coder.
Both Hoiku and Kyouiku frequently appear in the textbooks of “An Introduction to ECEC.” We found that there is a co-occurrence relation between Hoiku and Kyouiku. In the textbooks, Hoiku is differentiated from Kyouiku, often by describing what it is not, for example, “Hoiku is not the Kyouiku after elementary school.”
However, there is also a connection between Hoiku and Kyouiku. In other words, the difference between Hoiku and Kyouiku has a double meaning. On the one hand, Hoiku is different from Kyouiku in regard to the method of learning (learning through play or study). This shows the originality or singularity of Hoiku. On the other hand, there is a connection between Hoiku and Kyoiku in regard to the curricula.
