Abstract
The Containers and Packaging Recycling Law, which was executed fully in April 2000, newly includes plastic containers and packaging as target items for recycling. Because the City of Sapporo has set forth a goal to establish a sound material-cycle society within its region, it has promptly responded to the increase in sorted items in the revised recycling collection. Working toward its goal, Sapporo is actively inviting recycling facilities, such as a waste plastic liquefaction plant, to the area, as well as preparing new collection systems and selection facilities. In July 2000, the sorted collection of plastic containers and packaging was executed in the whole area of the city as the first government-designated city in Japan. Using the available data for waste amounts and treatment costs, etc, this paper reports on the current state of the recycling business, as well as collection and selection for plastic containers and packaging in the City of Sapporo.
