Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Penthylenediammonium pentabromobismutate(III) [NH₃(CH₂)₅NH₃]BiBr₅

Abstract

X-ray studies on [NH₃(CH₂)₅NH₃]BiBr₅ show that it crystallizes in the orthorhombic P2₁2₁2₁ space group with the following unit-cell dimensions: a = 7.9580(4)Å, b = 14.0110(16)Å, c = 14.0960(14)Å. The structure was refined to R = 0.0492. It consists of penthylenediammonium cations and one-dimensional [BiBr₅]_n^2- polyanionic zig-zag chains composed of deformed BiBr₆ octahedra connected by two cis vertices. These chains are themselves interconnected by means of the N-H…Br hydrogen bonds.
