Abstract

A total of 1294 Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates obtained in Changsha, China from 2003 to 2015 were examed for susceptibility to penicillin, ciprofloxacin, spectinomycin and ceftriaxone by disc diffusion method and the ceftriaxone MICs of 460 isolates during 2008-2015 were determined by agar dilution method and the ceftriaxone intermediate susceptible isolates were tested for azithromycin susceptibility in addition. The results exhibited that the resistant rate to penicillin and ciprofloxacin were 77.5% and 94.2%, respectively. Only 4 spectinomycin resistant and 2 spectinomycin intermediate susceptible isolates were exsisted. There were no ceftriaxone resistant isolates, but the percentage of intermediate susceptible to ceftriaxone increased from 1.8% in 2012 to 11.9% in 2015, and among the isolates of intermediate susceptible to ceftriaxone, 3 isolates showing non-susceptible to azithromycin, with 2 isolates harboring MIC of 0.5mg/L and 1 isolates harboring MIC of 1 mg/L. We recommend azithromycin for treating ceftriaxone intermediate susceptible and azithromycin susceptible N. gonorrhoeae isolates occurring in Changsha.
