Abstract
In a preceding paper (Shishido et al., 1965), it was disclosed that a typical infectious mononucleosis was established in monkeys by experimental infection with Rickettsia sennetsu. In this paper, the pathological investigations were carried out on those monkeys which were infected with Rickettsia sennetsu.
Monkeys infected with Rickettsia sennetsu by the intraperitoneal or subcutaneous route showed clinically mild fever and swelling of lymph nodes. Characteristic changes observed in the lymph nodes were diffuse proliferation of large basophilic lymphatic cells, disappearance of follicles, and obscure boundary of the medullary cord and sinus. These findings may be well consistent with those of infectious mononucleosis in the human being. In this meaning, it can be safely said that the disease induced in monkeys by experimental infection with Rickettsia sennetsu was confirmed as infectious mononucleosis by pathologic investigation.
