Abstract

During the period from June, 1971 to June, 1973, a total of 1, 727 cynomolgus monkeys were imported into this Institute. Among them, 356 monkeys in nine groups of about 40 monkeys each were examined for myxoand paramyxovirus infections.
Parainfluenza type 3 and SV5 virus infections were detected by serological examination in seven of nine groups of monkeys. Seroconversions were observed in several monkeys against mumps or HVJ, with elevation of antibody titers against parainfluenza type 3 and SV5. There were no serological evidences of parainfluenza types 1 or 2 virus infection. A monkey showed an HI titer rise to influenza type A and another to type B, but no neutralization antibody was found in their sera.
Virus isolation was carried out with monkeys with some respiratory disorders or died from respiratory syndroms imported between February and August, 1973. Parainfluenza type 3, SV5 viruses and unidentified cytopathogenic agents were isolated from nasopharyngeal swabs and the respiratory organs, in agreement with the serological results.
