Abstract
The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among prostitutes was investigated at a genitourinary hospital in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1985 and 1986. The most common STD was Chlamydia trachomatis infection, followed by gonorrhorea and condyloma acuminatum. Candidiasis, trichomoniasis and genital herpes were relatively uncommon. The rate of prostitutes who had STD but had no subjective symptoms were 42.9% in 1985 and 30.9% in 1986. The rate of prostitutes having mixed STD infection was 35.8% among the summed 162 STD-contracted prostitutes.
