The aim of this study was to develop and test a medication assessment tool, in order to provide medication teaching system for Chinese elderly patients. Methods : (1) Development of items of instrument was based on 23 studies and a semi-structured interview in China. The latter was a qualitative study of a convenient sample of 10 patients (aged ≥65) of a local home health agency and 4 nurses employed by this agency. (2) This tested reliability and validity of the instrument by 5 nurses and 20 patients as indicated above and by 56 nurses and 126 patients in inner medicine of health agency as above. Results : This instrument contained 18 items. Content validity was confirmed by the panel of Japanese and Chinese experts, who agreed that the instrument was logical and contained the necessary information. Interrater reliability was 0.83, test-retest reliability was 0.92, and criterion-related validity was 0.82, Cronbach's alpha was 0.73. About construct validity, although factor analysis, 6 factors that can be explained as a predictive construct concept were extracted. Conclusions: These results supported the usefulness of a formal instrument to assess medication situation in elderly patients.

The purpose of this research is to examine the problems and characteristics of communication between nursing students and the elderly. The method used in this research was the questionnaire placement method involving 833 nursing students. The questions were compiled based on the answers the nursing students provided in a free description formula reflecting the relationship they had with the elderly during their internship. The questionnaire consisted of 43 questions, where the content validity had been verified. The evaluation scoring scale was 7, ranging from "extremely applicable " to "not applicable at all." An exploratory factor analysis method using SPSS and the multiple dimensional scaling were adopted for its analysis. As a result, four factors were extracted to form characteristics of the communication with the elderly. These factors were "uncertainty regarding the relationship," "apprehension regarding the relationship," "cognitive bias regarding the relationship" and "difficulty regarding the relationship." These factors represented the attitude of the nursing students influenced by their uneasiness toward the elderly as well as the positive value they perceived in the elderly. The communication was characterized by the concepts plotted on the two axes of cognition and attitude.
