The Thick-billed Warbler Acrocephalus aedon normally breeds from southwestern Siberia across the continent to the Amur River region on the Pacific seaboard, and winters from India to Indochina. An eastern and western subspecies are recognized. Previously only one record had been obtained in Japan, in Nagano Prefecture in May of 1927. On 5 February 1997, an individual of this species was sighted on riverside farmland near the mouth of the Fuji River, in Shizuoka Prefecture. This individual was netted on 13 February, and judged to be a juvenile in first winter plumage. The bird was banded and released, and observed to remain in the vicinity until 16 April. The area in which the warbler foraged is warmed by waste water constantly discharged from a nearby factory. The bird was observed feeding on bloodworms (Chironomus sp.).

Two injured adult Ospreys and one Brunnich's Guillemot fouled with oil were brought to the Niigata Prefecture Bird Protection Center. One of the Ospreys was found immobilized along the coast on 13 October, 1996 and weighed only 950 grams. The bird was given injections of terimix and tetracyclin, and fed frozen pond smelts (Hypomesus sp.). Weight recovered to 1400 grams, and the bird was banded and released on 30 November. The second Osprey was caught in a fishing net on 13 May 1997. This bird was fed common carp (Cyrius carpio) and crucian carp (Carassius cuvieri), and was banded and released on 7 June at a weight of 1650 grams. The Brunnich’s Guillemot fouled with oil was brought to the center on 22 February 1997, in a severely weakened condition. Terimix and tetracyclin were injected, and the bird was fed on frozen pond smelts. Ten fish were fed on the first day, then 30 per day for two day and 40 per day afterwards. The bird was banded and released on 20 March.
