Measurements of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) within two young birch stands were compared. Measurements were made during early August under clear and slightly cloudy conditions. Frequency distribution of the relative PPFD showed a L-shape. Relative PPFD in the understory was estimated at 6.1-6.7% of Betula ermanii stand and at 10.7-12.1% of B. maximowicziana one. The average duration of sunfleck and the mean maximum PPFD of Betula ermanii plantation and B. maximowicziana one were 6.7 sec., 179.2μE・m^<-2>・s^<-1> and 10.3 sec., 271.3μE・m^<-2>・s^<-1>, respectively. The light conditions in a stand that were contributed by sunfleck were 34% for Betula ermanii plantation and 43% for B. maximowicziana one. The above mentioned results imply that the photosynthetic light environments within the Betula maximowicziana plantation was better than that in the B. ermanii one.

Xylem pressure potential of Abies sachalinensis was measured with pressure chamber. The higher value of xylem pressure potential at dawn maintained about-0.2 MPa during the growing period. Minimum xylem pressure potential at noon was relatively high value in bud flushing period and defoliation one, showed at -1.2 to -1.5 MPa from the bud formation stage to before the defoliation one, and decreased rapidly in November, maintained under -2.5 MPa in winter. In respect to the lower level of xylem pressure potential in midsummer were discuseed with relation to the soil water content, and the illumination intensity.

1. Total number of woody plants is 45 species, anemochoryl 17 and zoochoryl 28 species, and its density is about 13 thousands per ha. 2. Trees and shrubs are bushy according to bush cutting in every early winter and they have grown again and again by epicormic shoots. 3. In invasion and growth, they are also influenced by stout perennial herbs and grasses. 4. These mixed vegetation of trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses are the best ground cover for the soil and water conservation at the ski slope.
