Prosity in coal is of great significance because of its influence on coal behavior during mining, preparation and utilization processes. It is well-known that Xe NMR is very poweful to estimate micro pore structures, at the same time there is a lack of information for chemical composition of micropores. In this paper, the micropores structures of some kind of coals and rapid heat treated sample of Witbank coal have been investigated using the combination between Xe and hyper-polarized Xe gas NMR spectroscopy. These combination techniques showed the estimation of average pore size for coals and also these chemical compositions because the activity of hyper-polarized Xe gas is lost with the inteaction of π electron as soon as this gas puts into aromatic regions.

Pyridine insoluble extract fraction (PI-0) obtained from CS_2/NMP mixed solvent (1:1 by volume) extraction of Upper Freeport coal is partially insoluble in the mixed solvent. But in the presence of tetrabutylammoniumacetate (TBAA), PI-0 became almost completely soluble in the mixed solvent and NMP. After removal of the solvents and TBAA from the solution, the recovered PI (PI-1) was found to be completely soluble in the mixed solvent and NMP. The difference of solubility between PI-0 and PI-1 was attributed to their different aggregation states. FTIR, XRD, DSC and thermomechanical analysis (TMA) were employed to characterize the two solid PIs with different aggregation states. The results suggest that PI-1 is a less aggregated structure compared to PI-0.

Thermal extractions with various organic solvents were carried out in order to produce HyperCoal (ashless coal) with a high yield. Light cycle oil (LCO) was found to be cost-effective and useful as an industrial extraction solvent, since it gave high extraction yields more than 60% by hot-filtration with a flow-type extractor. We also found that softening temperature of raw coal was a good index to select a coal giving the high extraction yield; the coal which shows softening temperature at lower temperature gave the higher yield. The high extraction yields with non-polar and no hydrogen-donating solvents like LCO can be the result of thermal relaxation; the lower softening temperature of the coals, the more remarkable is the thermal relaxation of the coal molecules, and the higher extraction yield is obtained.

Coal-derived liquid(N; 5600) was hydrodenitrogenated over Ni-W/Al_2O_3 catalyst by using a continuous microreactor for five months to evaluate the catalyst life. It was shown that the catalyst could reduce the nitrogen content to 10ppm at LHSV 1 or to 100ppm at LHSV 2 for more than one year. The nitrogen compounds in the feedstock and the product oils were analyzed by GC-NPD, and their structures and reactivities were discussed.

Characterization and quantity of umburnt char present in bed material (UBC) and cyclone trap fly ash (FA) produced from Blair Athol (BA) and Nanton (NT) in PFBC were attempted. Umburnt char were characterized by scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDAX), thermogravimetry combine with differential thermal analyzer (TG-DTA), and X-ray diffraction. Char content in fly ashes was quantified by differential thermal gravimetry (DTG) and weight loss (WL) profiles from TG-DTA. Important peak to calculation to calculate umburnt char content in sample is 580 (450-625)℃ peak. From database were recorded during reaction, weight loss of BAFA and NTFA in that peak are 0.4% and 0.58% wt respectively.
