This study aimed to investigate the accuracy and consistency of hand clapping interval before and after practice. Fourteen healthy subjects (8 men and 6 women; mean age, 24.2±5.3 years) performed hand clapping while conscious of the rhythm at 500 ms intervals before and after practice. The subjects performed hand clapping 70 times in accordance with auditory stimuli at 500 ms intervals in the practice task. The mean coefficient of variation and absolute error of the hand clapping intervals were compared between before and after the practice task. The mean hand clapping interval after the practice task was significantly shortened compared with that before the practice task. The coefficient of variation and absolute error after the practice task were significantly smaller than those before the practice task. The ability to reproduce the rhythm at 500 ms intervals significantly differed among the subjects. We suggest that hand clapping practice is useful for therapists to perform accurate and consistent hand clapping.
