1 The nocturnal activity of the Oriental free-tailed bat(Tadarida insignis) was deter-mined by visual observation, video recording and echolocation call recordings. The study site was the castle tower of Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The study period was from March 2013 to March 2016, it was when the castle was illuminated from sunset to 23:00 throughout the year. 2 The stone walls of the castle were used as a roosting site for T. insignis in spring, but it was highly likely that they moved to other locations during other seasons. 3 Illuminated areas attract insects, which are selected as a feeding ground by T. insignis. The bat made searching noises while circling in the sky and swooped down to pursue large flying insects. 4 The first echolocation call was often recorded within an hour after sunset, and the earliest was 12 minutes after sunset. The last sound was often recorded between 30 to 44 minutes before sunrise, and the latest was 16 minutes before sunrise. However, from June to September, the number of echolocation calls decreased and the time of first recordings tended to be later. In winter, calls were recorded intermittently, alt-hough the frequency decreased. 5 Continuous nighttime sound recordings for at least one week per season for at least one year are necessary to determine if T. insignis is present.

1 A literature survey was conducted to deter-mine the status of past mink farming in Kumamoto Prefecture. In the early 1960s, more than 100 individuals of mink were farmed in the Aso region of Kumamoto Prefecture. 2 Mink farming in Kumamoto Prefecture was carried out by several local breeding groups for the purpose of profit-making. A trader in Kumamoto City was confirmed to sell minks to the partners and purchased the juveniles born. The prefecture tried to suppress the boom.

Bat echolocation calls were recorded by Song Meter Mini Bat on Takashima Island, Oita Prefecture, from October 28th to 30th, 2022. Echolocation calls of East Asian free-tailed bat Tadarida insignis were recorded several times late at night. Their echolocation calls were not recorded within four and a half hours after sunset and within three and a half hours before sunrise. This indicated that the island was not utilized as a day roosting site by the species during this season. Echolocation calls of three other bat species were recorded including a high possibility of Eastern bent-winged bat Miniopterus fuliginosus.

1 Maternity colonies of Asian particolored bat were observed at the Kyushu Shinkansen via-ducts in Uki city and Hikawa town, Kumamoto Prefecture, from April to July 2022 and from April to June 2023. For the species, this was the third case of maternity colonies reported in Kyushu. 2 More than 2,200 individuals utilized the via-ducts in Hikawa town from the end of May to the beginning of June 2023, just before parturition. This was the biggest maternity colony for the species in Kyushu found so far. 3 Five newly born babies were observed on June 9th,2023 in Hikawa town. This indicates that the parturition starts at the beginning of June. 4 According to the counting of individuals emerging from their roosting sites, this species starts gathering at the Kyushu Shinkansen viaducts for parturition at the beginning of April, and the number reaches its peak from late April to the beginning of May. Parturition occurs from the beginning of June to the beginning of July. Then the colonies leave Kyushu Shinkansen viaducts at the end of July to the middle of August.

A survey revealed that three specimens of the East Asian free-tailed bat Tadarida insignis were collected in Kumamoto Prefecture in the 20th century. They were a female collected in Kumamoto City in 1964, a female collected in Kumamoto City in 1964, and a male collected in Minami-aso Village in 1981. The details of these specimens, including the collector, are summarised.

I examined two drawings of the house shrew dated 26 August 1759 in a collection of pictures entitled “Moukaikikan”, made by the Lord of Kumamoto, Shigekata Hosokawa (1721-1785). The drawings appeared to be based on dry specimens collected in Nagasaki, as described in the text next to the pictures, but the details were unknown. Considering the close relationship between Shi-gekata Hosokawa and Ransui Tamura, a Japanese naturalist, I concluded that the specimens of the house shrews at Moukaikikan were probably from Ransui’s collection brought back to Edo from Nagasaki in 1758.
