1. Van Tieghem stated that in the phanerogamous plants the the lateral root originates in the pericycle cells of the mother root and it was followed by almost all of the subsequent investigators. But as far as my observations in
Vicia Faba and several other spermatophytes concern, the first activation in the development of the lateral root is traced not only to the pericycle cells but also to the endodermal as well as the cortical cells. Thus the development of the lateral root is due to the activity of the cells of three different histological origins.
2. The growing point of the prelome of the lateral root is derived from the cells of the pericycle of the mother root, that of periblem mostly from the endodermal cells, and that of the root cap from the cortical cells.
3. The same developmental processes above mentioned were observed in the adventive root formation in Ipomoea Batatas and Cucurbita sp.
