Comparison among major earthquakes occurred in Turkey (1999), Kobe (1995) and Iran (Manjil, 1990 and Tabas, 1978) from the view point of Ground Motion Parameters (GMP) and building damages is investigated in this study. Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), Velocity (PGV) and Displacement (PGD) as well as Spectral Intensity (SI), Power Spectral Intensity (PSI) and finally, Predominant Frequency (PF) are considered as GMP. Totally, 30 acceleration-time histories of the earthquakes having PGA more than 100 gal were dealt with. GMP of 4 records of each earthquake having big PGA are compared with each other and outline of damage in each earthquake is given.

El Salvador, one of the smallest and most crowded nations in Central America, extends about 240 kilometers westward from the Gulf of Fonseca to the border with Guatemala. This country was struck by two devastating earthquakes within a month. The first quake of Jan. 13, 2001, which was centered off El Salvador's southern coast, damaged and/or destroyed nearly 108, 000 houses, and killed at least 944 people, including hundreds of residents buried in a huge amount of soil slipped down Las Colinas mountainside in the city of Neuva San Salvador (Santa Tecla). This report outlines the findings obtained through the reconnaissance by the JSCE team and laboratory tests that followed it.

A strong earthquake hit El Salvador on January 13, 2001. The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 caused huge damage in the urbanized areas as well as numerous landslides. In case of these types of earthquake, the identification of hard hit areas is important and necessary information for decision-makers to handle the disaster relief process. In this study, remote sensing images taken before and after the earthquake by Landsat 7 (ETM+) satellite are compared to identify the location of landslides and hard hit urban areas. The proposed method uses the rationing between bands in the visible range as well as the sharpening of the multi-spectral bands by merging with the panchromatic band. It is expected that with the help of this additional band the identification of landslides and damaged areas will be improved.

The January, 2001 Earthquake in El Salvador caused widespread damage to buildings and several kinds of civil engineering structures due to ground shaking and earthquake-induced ground failures. In addition to several largescale landslides in the mountainous areas, extensive soil liquefaction was also observed in the alluvial plain in the Pacific lowlands. This paper discusses the results of the post-earthquake damage investigation conducted in the area after the earthquake, with emphasis on the liquefaction-induced damage.

An improvement of the FEM-FDM coupled scheme is presented for dynamic analysis of fully saturated soil considering large deformation. In the space domain, the equilibrium equation of fluid saturated soil is discretized by the finite element method, as well as the continuity equation is discretized by the finite difference method within a rectangular mesh which is difference from that used by the finite element method. The finite difference method used in a difference mesh would not suffer from numerical problems when the initial mesh of the finite element method is not rectangular or the mesh is heavily distorted for large deformation. The proposed method is applied to a one-dimensional elastic consolidation problem and an embankment problem in order to verify its usefulness.
