Abstract
When applying the pulse voltage to a discharge tube using dielectric barrier discharge, discharge occurs two times in a pulse at the rising and the falling edge of the voltage pulse. Here the second electrical discharge can be controlled by adjusting the pulse width. In this paper we investigates the influence of the pulse width on the luminance of the barrier discharge lamp with an external electrode.
The lamp used in this study has two electrodes in and on the outside of the lamp respectively; internal and external electrodes. Internal electrode was connected to the power source side and external electrode was connected to the ground side. Luminance was observed under the condition of pulse repetition frequency of 10 kHz, peak voltage from 1 kV to 3 kV and pulse width from 2 us to 98 us.
Luminance took almost same value from 30 us to 90 us, whereas it decreased by both deceasing the pulse width less than 30 us and increasing it more than 90 us. It means that the higher luminance can be obtained by denying the overlap of the two discharge at rising and falling edge.
