Abstract Functional electrical stimulation(FES)has been investigated by several researches as a method for achieving walking of paraplegic patients. However, there still exists several problems in achieving a practical gait and only with FES. So, some kinds of orthosis and carts, assist the walking. In this report, we have designed an active assisting system which co-operates with FES. The assisting system provides the users with the supports of their weights through their controllable upper limbs, and also generates the acceleration/deceleration for walking. Several experiments has been carried out to show that the user can walk efficiently both with this assisting system and FES.
