The influence of surface wettability on plasma proteins adsorption, i.e. albumin and fibronectin, and also the cell adhesion and proliferation behavior of osteoblast in vitro were investigated.Osteoblast tended to adhere onto hydrophilic surfaces much better than to hydrophobic surface in the initial stage. The fibronectin adsorbed much more on a hydrophilic surface while albumin dominated on a hydrophobic one. Cell spreading also showed the same tendency. Cell proliferated the best at a moderate hydrophilic surface. These findings suggest the importance of the surface wettability of biomaterials on protein adsorption and subsequent cell behavior.

Allergy caused by dental metals has been getting a great deal of attention , and there are not a few case that require the expenditure of a lot of efforts at treating patients for dental metal allergy in daily practice. In endodontics , zinc oxide that is contained in root canal sealers is not considered a negligible material. In the present study , root canal sealers containing titanium oxide as an alternative material to zinc oxide were developed to evaluate their mechanical properties in the ISO (6876)Standard.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the adhesion of dentine bonding system in new generation, using a newly-defined micro test, that is, a micro-tensile bond test where four layers and three interfaces were newly defined by one of the authors. The specimen models were S-type(standard type ;normally, adhesive resin layer/hybrid layer interface(interface II) is at the center of the sample) and T-type(very thin hybrid layer exists). The adhesive strength and fracture mode in new generation products, reported by Dr S.Uno, were discussed theoretically, and then the dynamics of hybrid interface including three interfaces among four layers is proposed.

Molecular structures of the organic films generated from the mixed solution of a 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithione (dithiol) derivative (VBATDT) and a phosphoric acid derivative (M10P) onto the various metal substrates were investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. When the VBATDT is adsorbed on the metal, the heterocyclic group changes its structure from the thione form to the thiol form. Under the condition that the competitive adsorption is occurred, four different chemisorbed layers were formed.

Bone implant materials are also made of Poly (DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and have been shown to accelerate bone healing or induce more rapid bone formation in comparison to untreated controls. This study intended to evaluate the combination effect of PLGA sponge scaffold and cultured rat bone marrow cells.

Two cornstarch solutions, which included sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as fiber or calcium diphosphate as abrasive particle, were prepared for mediums. Effect of the fiber and the abrasive particle in the medium on an occlusal wear of resin composite in the combined wear test, which carried out an occlusal wear and a toothbrush wear alternately on a specimen, was evaluated.

We evaluated the gene expression of macrophage-like RAW264 cells exposed to LPS and LD
50 Ni ion by DNA microarray. When LPS was absent, detoxicating and repair DNAs were strongly expressed. When LPS-stimulated, inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1beta and super-oxide dismutase genes were expressed, and genes to cause cell cycle arrest were expressed.

A rare earth magnet is covered with ferric and austenitic stainless steel in dental magnetic attachments because the stainless steel plays roles of a magnetic circuit and protection from corrosive environments. In this study, corrosion resistance of the assembly of the magnet covered with the stainless steel was estimated by measuring its anodic polarization curves.

Corrosion behavior of Ni-Ti alloy in simulated physiological solution containing proteins was investigated using electrochemical techniques, surface analyses and analysis of dissolved metal ions by atomic absorption spectrophtometry. It was found that protein molecules that have high isoelectric point strongly adsorbed on the alloy surface and inhibited the corrosion reaction.

Authors previously reported that the intermetallic compound of Ti
2Cu that led to improve the grindability of Ti-Cu alloys did not break down at electrochemically high potential in 0.9%NaCl solution. In this study, Cu ions released from a series of binary Ti-Cu alloys containing 5-20mass%Cu were quantitatively analyzed. Corrosion resistance of Ti
2Cu was estimated on the basis that investigation of the correlation between composition of the Ti-Cu alloys and the released Cu ions could establish the amount of Cu ions released from Ti
2Cu or alpha-Ti.

Soft denture liners having viscoelastic properties are widely used for edentulous patients. This study evaluated the influence of type of monomer on storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss tangent of cold-cured acrylic soft denture liners. Dibutyl sebacate and poly (ethyl methacrylate / n-butyl methacrylate) were used as plasticizer and powder, respectively. The results suggest that the viscoelastic properties of the cold-cured acrylic soft denture liners can be controlled over a wide range by varying the type of monomer.

Titanium and its alloys are well known to decrease the corrosion resistance in the saline solution containing fluoride. We recently reported that the corrosion resistance of Ti-Cr alloys was depending on Cr contents. In this study, we made the Ti-Cr casting alloy containing 5, 10, 15 or 20mass% Cr content, and evaluated the surface compositions before and after immersion test in a saline solution containing fluoride.
