Abstract

Two new methods were developed to estimate the population densities of the rust mite (Eriophyes chibaensis Kadono) on Japanese pear. In the sticky tape method, transparent, sticky tape was rubbed onto the underside of the pear leaf, and the mites sticking to the tape were counted under stereomicroscopy. In that case, mites sticking to the tapes were clearly estimated by using colored paper of green, black or brown as the colore of background of the tapes. In the water-sensitive paper method, the tape with captured mites was pressed against water-sensitive paper, and mite density was roughly estimated by the quantity of blue spots on the paper. These methods were considered to be useful and effective enough to estimate rust mite populations.
