A cluster watching method for sampling Leptotrombidium scutellare larvae on a black cloth was first proposed by Suzuki in1985. This method is proved to be the most efficient in sampling questing L. scutellare larvae in fields, though it has not widely been used since its original description. With this method, L. scutellare larvae proved to form clusters on relatively humid places that seemed different from their breeding sites. The mandarin orange groves on the slopes were thought to be one of the specific habitats for L. scutellare at Yamakita Town, Kanagawa Prefecture. A large number of larvae can be easily taken by this method, but some devices are necessary for recovering the larvae rapidly from the black cloth.
