With the rise in compact living spaces, interlocking joints have become a popular and efficient solution because they offer structural stability and aesthetic appeal. However, the frequent assembly and disassembly of furniture joints can result in wear and tear. A thorough investigation is being conducted to identify and overcome the obstacles in selfassembly. This study establishes a design principle inspired by a three-dimensional interlocking joint to enhance the portability of furniture panels. As nonprofessionals may assemble joints, a user-friendly joint design is essential. We present a novel planar interlocking joint system (PIJS) design for furniture panels utilizing geometric ornamentation to promote cultural diversity. Four prototypes were created by integrating the mortise and tenon joint with an interlocking joint and incorporating a geometric ornamentation guide. This study conducted four experimental sessions analyzing PIJS prototypes with 20 graduate students aged 18-35 at Iwate University. Our findings suggest that adding ornamentation to a planar interlocking joint system can make it easier to navigate hidden holes and notches. PIJS has proven to be advantageous for various purposes, particularly in furniture assembly. Additionally, this study provides insights into the design of planar interlocking joint systems for a wide range of applications.
