Abstract

It is important to study the shearing properties of pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) in the micro -deformation range because of the applications of PSA in industry. The standard test method has been used mainly for quality control purposes; however, such the test method lacks sufficient resolution to analyse the shear adhesion properties of PSA. Hence,a higher resolution test apparatus has been developed. The apparatus can be used to analyse the static visco-elastic properties of PSA with a maximum measurement resolution of 10 nm using a laser displacement sensor. In particular, the apparatus is useful for evaluating the cohesive properties of PSA because of its high resolution. In an experiment performed using the apparatus, the deformation and slippage of anacrylic PSA specimen were measured under different test conditions. The influence of cross-linking agent ratio and adherend temperature on the shearing properties of PSA were evaluated using a visco-elastic model that describe micro-deformation. As a result by using analysis of variance, the effects of the adherend temperature and of the cross-linking agent ratio were significant on the visco-elastic coefficients of PSA. The analysis results for creep compliance revealed that the effects caused by the cross linking agent ratio and the adherend temperature occurred at later loading times. In addition, the time-temperature superposition principle was applicable to the shear loading time and the adherend temperature within the experimental range of 15 to 65℃ in the micro-shearing adhesive test.
