Industrial Product and UI Design that Expresses the“ Wabi” Aesthetic

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to confirm the validity and applicability of the modeling technique for expressing the wabi aesthetic derived in the first draft of “Research on Modeling Techniques for Expressing ‘Wabi’”. The design is a user interface design for a smartphone screen.
As a result of interviews with experts and questionnaires to users, this work showed that by using modeling techniques, the wabi aesthetic can be expressed in industrial products and in UI design, which is not easily associated with wabi. On the other hand, although the perception of the wabi aesthetic differed depending on the level of understanding of wabi, it was found that the Japanese-ness of the design was perceived regardless of the level of understanding of wabi.
