Abstract

The development of this font incorporates the Japanese renmen style (connected writing). While previous fonts utilized ligatures to achieve this connected style, this font does not rely on ligatures. The first step was to digitally reproduce typefaces used in metal type. Based on the sense of discomfort encountered during this process, improvements were made using OpenType and variable font technologies. Metal type often resulted in a monotonous finish, but by applying variable font technology with weight axes, more natural nuances and modulations were achieved. Some parts of the characters appeared unnatural, so connection patterns were reviewed and improved. Based on the prototypes, a font capable of expressing renmen was created.
