Search for Originate Japanese aromatherapy from traditional Japanese herbal fragrant cosmetics

Abstract

Prior to the Edo period, fragrant cosmetics ware enjoyed by a limited number of the people in the Upper class. During in the middle of Edo period common citizen also were able to enjoy fragrant cosmetics under the stable politics situation.

“Miyako fuzoku kewai den” was published in 1813 in the middle of Edo period.

This book became a best seller and this was read for more than 100 years.

It became a reference for cosmetics and styling for Japanese women for a long time.

I have researched how the Japanese has enjoyed traditional Japanese herbal cosmetics during the Edo period. According to “Miyako fuzoku kewai den”, traditional Chinese herbal prescription has been mainstream until new technology from Europe was imported. This new technology was well accepted in Japan but traditional prescription were still common.

Both of Chinese and European methods were used by middle of the Meiji period.
