The chemical nature of the sheath materials produced by the four species of leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps UHLER (Deltocephalidae), Tettigella viridis LINNE (Tettigellidae), Laodelphax striatellus FALLEN (Delphacidae), and Nilaparvata lugens STAL (Delphacidae) was studied. Histochemical tests indicated that the sheath materials of the leafhoppers were mainly lipoproteinaceous. There was also some evidence for the precent of a cetrtain type of neutral mucosubstance, especially in the sheath materials of N. cincticeps and T. viridis. Pectic substance and chitin appeared to be absent. The results were compared with those of previous workers.
