The close relationship between the proboscis extending time and the ingested amount of sugars in the white cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae crucivora, was clearly recognized within a definite range of the proboscis extending time. The ingested amount of sucrose and fructose was approximately equal and higher than that of glucose. Some experimental evidences suggested that 1) the crop and the terminal part of the proboscis play as important role in the regulation of the proboscis extending time, 2) these organs have unknown chemoreceptors and 3) the receptive mechanism of the tarsal chemoreceptors on the stimulus of sucrose is entirely independent of the mechanism of feeding sugars through the proboscis.
