The ovarioles of silkworm pupae comprise many oocytes showing successive development in sequence with the largest one at the posterior end of each ovariole. The approximate weight of an oocyte can be indicated as an index to oocyte age on which glycogen synthesis, as well as protein accumulation, is closely dependent. The glyogen synthesizing activities are most striking during the few days when pupal oocytes start to grow. Such activity was observed 4 days after pupation in about 20 oocytes lying at the posterior end of each ovariole. The accumulation of these two substances aforementioned was completed within 2 or 3 days, starting with the posterior oocytes and going on towards the terminal of each ovariole.
