A series of experiments were designed to examine the effects of the prothoracic glands (PG) and oenocytes (OE) taken from the last instar larvae of the cabbage armyworm, Mamestra brassicae L. on the morphogenesis of the wing discs of the same host in vitro. It was found that the oenocytes alone scarcely affected the wing discs, but the latter showed remarkable development when co-cultured with PG and OE. The wing discs co-cultured with OE in the medium containing α-ecdysone also developed more than those treated with α-ecdysone alone. A further interesting fact was that there was not difference between wing discs treated with OE+β-ecdysone and β-ecdysone only. From these in vitro experiments the joint action of PG (or α-ecdysone) and OE in vitro has been considered.
