Abstract

The characterized source model (0.2–10 Hz) composed of strong motion generation areas (SMGAs) of the 1993 MJ7.8 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake was estimated using the empirical Green’s function method. The short-period spectral level was found to be larger than the scaling relation for crustal earthquakes and was equivalent to that for interplate earthquakes on the Pacific plate. A SMGA of 6 km × 12 km with a stress drop of 36.9 MPa was located near Okushiri Island. At the K-NET station in Aonae on the soft sediments of Okushiri Island, the instrumental seismic intensity was estimated to be about 6.5.
