Abstract
In Edo-era, the Ministry of Civil Engineering and Construction was named "Fushin-kata" and the Ministry of that office was "Fushin-bugyo". Being ranked with "Sakuji-kata" and "Kobushin-kata" (these two offices were the Ministry of Architectural Construction), it took charge of official construction work under "Edo-Shogunate". Therefor, in order to study the historical progress of estimation for building in Edo-era, it is also necessary to decipher and make clear the historical document concerning "Fushin-kata". In "Fushin-kata", they had a data book for audit of civil engineering and construction……for instance, road, bridge (wooden or stone-built), bank, stone wall, stone flooring, quarrying, turfing, clay carrying, etc. About these works, the standard labour, the standard wage or material cost, and proper quantity of material were indicated in a table. The name of that data book was "Fushin-kata-tsumoritate-teiho" or "Go-fushin-tsumoritate-teiho-gaki". It was made in "Kyoho-era" (1716〜1735) by Yasoemon Izawa who was an official of "Kanjo-ginmi-kata" that was the Board of Audit in "Edo-Shogunate". The technical skill for estimation for building in "Fushin-kata" was inferior to that of "Sakuji-kata". It was due to the fact that the civil engineering was more closely conected with nature than the architectural construction.
