Abstract
This report deals with the reason why dwellers have selected public housing, and the extent to which their living conditions have been improved by moving to public housing. The conclusions are as follows; 1) The level of living conditions of applicants for public housing has been improving slowly. The area of living space of applicants varies with the regions. It is higher in a provincial city than in a metropolis, which is a reflection of regional housing conditions. 2) In a metropolis, public housing dwellers have selected their present houses because their rents are lower. On the other hand, in a middle-sized city or a rural town, the reasons for their moving to public housing have been mainly because of marriage and occupational needs. 3) The low house rent is the major advantage which dwellers consider of public housing. More than a half of them appreciate its low rents. On the other hand, the dwellers who appreciate the living floor space of public housing are many in a metropolis, but few in a rural town. 4) That is, many dwellers have acquired better living conditions in comparison with their former by moving to public housing in a metropolis, but only a few in a provincial city or in a rural town. 5) Accordingly, the length the residents keep on living in public housing is longer in a metropolis and a industrial city than in a provincial city or a rural town.
