Abstract
Scallops of the beam-web at welded beam-to-column connection of the steel flame bring partial loss of cross section at the part subjected large bending moment due to a severe earthquake. Therefore, they are not desirable from the view point of mechanical behaivors. In this paper, three-point bending tests of cross-shaped specimens of beams connected H-shaped column are carried out to investigate the effect of beam-scallops and differences between various welding conditions on fracture behaviors, ultimate strengths and deformation capacities of the steel beam-end. It is concluded that a beam without scallops has about 1.1 times higher strength and 1.5 times larger deformation capacity than a conventional beam with scallops.
